Parish Nurse Program
Jesus said "I have come that you might
have life, and have it abundantly." John 10:10
What is The Parish Nurse Program all about?
The Parish Nurse Program offers churches a holistic approach to health that recognizes the interrelationship of the Spirit, the body and the mind. Each Church develops its own program to help their parishioners learn how to live healthier lives. Part of a national and inter-denominational movement, the local Parish Nurse Program is cosponsored by Moses Cone Health Systems, The Duke Endowment and local churches.
What is a Parish Nurse?
A Parish Nurse is a registered nurse who works with the parishioners to enhance the quality of life including the body, mind and spirit. The Parish Nurse works to identify and to help meet physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual health needs of individuals to promote health, healing and wholeness in people.
The Parish Nurse has the goal of directing the church’s focus towards the prevention of disease and promotion of a healthy life style.
The Parish Nurse will work to empower individuals to take and active role in making decisions about their own health and well-being.
What is a role of a Parish Nurse?
What the Parish
Nurse can do for you includes, but is NOT limited to :
Health Counselor
Discuss individual health needs or concerns regarding illness and medications, prevention and wellness, and provide reassurance and support during times of concern or crisis. Already, experience has shown that the visibility and availability of a Parish Nurse helps parishioners to recognize, acknowledge and get medical help for symptoms they otherwise may have ignored or denied.
Health Educator
Through classes,
talks and group activities the Parish Nurse will be able to provide health information and promote the relationship between faith, health and lifestyle choices.
Referral Source
The Parish Nurse can serve as a liaison to a variety of community resources and services. These may include referrals to church staff, physicians, self-help groups, community agencies, etc.
Advocate & Liaison
The Parish Nurse can
assist parishioners who need help or support for decision making about health care issues. He or she can also serve as a liaison between hospital and home and/or patient and physician.
