Lenten Days of Abstinence and Fasting

DAYS OF ABSTINENCE
(MEATLESS MEALS)

Ash Wednesday & Good Friday, all Fridays in Lent
+ Applies to Catholics 14 years and older
+ Under the present law, egg or milk products, soups or gravies flavored with meat juices are allowed

DAYS OF FASTING

Ash Wednesday & Good Friday
+ Applies to all Catholics from age 18 to 59
+ Only one full meal a day may be taken
+ Two small meals, sufficient to maintain strength, are allowed, but together they should not equal another full meal

These regulations are considered to be a serious obligation for all Catholics. However, those who are ill, pregnant, on medication or special diets for health concerns, or those who must work at extremely physical jobs may be exempt from these regulations. A more serious reason should be present to excuse Ash Wednesday and Good Friday penance.
