Becoming a Catholic (Inquiry and RCIA)

Men and women become Catholic through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, called “RCIA” for short. RCIA is not simply a program or a class—it is a ‘way’ into Catholic life, based on commitment to Christ and His Body the Church. There is no cost involved, and anyone may drop out of the process at any time.

Anyone with questions about the spiritual life or about Catholic teaching is directed to our “Inquiry” sessions.  There, you are invited to share your questions, and we try to give brief, clear answers and offer some elements of the wisdom for life given us through the Catholic faith.

‘Inquirers’ are invited to consider RCIA. In RCIA they are introduced to the Scriptures, Catholic doctrine, the Catholic life of prayer, and begin to acquire a sense of the Catholic moral universe. They begin to hear more deeply the call of Jesus in their daily lives. They meet active Catholics, as well as other people like themselves who are seeking.

After a while they are invited to commit to a serious program of spiritual growth, in preparation for receiving the initiation mysteries: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. They are prayed for by the whole parish, participate in special liturgical rites and blessings, gather and discuss the Scriptures read at Mass, and interact with practicing Catholics from all walks of life. In short, they participate for some months in a process of formation in faith that usually climaxes at the Easter Vigil as they become full members of the Catholic Church.

Between 20-30 adults of every age, ethnicity, background, and previous spiritual path take part each year. There is a version of RCIA for children as well.

How to begin: To find out more or to begin the process, a simple conversation is all that is needed. Call Jim McCullough at 274-6520 x335 or email him at jmccullough@olgchurch.org
